I recently came across an interesting podcast on the issue of "what is ground for divorce", which I commented on because of the misunderstanding of most people on this issue... this is a copy of my comment which summarizes my earlier article written some time ago which you can read here.
My comment to that podcast:
Agree with the host, but it goes deeper in the scriptural understanding of Matthew 19:9 that says: "And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery."
First, the problem with most people is that they only think of "what is ground for divorce", when in actual fact the question should be "what is ground for 'divorce and remarriage'". The issue is not about "divorce" only, the issue is about "divorce-and-remarriage". One can divorce for the grounds mentioned in this conversation of abuse, addiction, abandonment, etc., of course.
However, the exception clause of Matthew 19:9 can be understood better when it is read this way: And I say unto you, whosoever shall put away his wife and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery -- except it be for fornication...
...then the one who is victim of the unfaithfulness of the other can remarry...
... but the one who commits the fornication against the other spouse cannot remarry.
In other words, if someone's spouse passes away, that one can remarry any one who is a widow/widower or single, but cannot marry a divorced person who divorced for reasons other than having been victim of an unfaithful spouse.
All other causes do not allow for "remarriage". One can divorce for all those other reasons like abuse, addiction, abandonment, etc., but they cannot remarry.
Marriage is a covenant with God, not just a contract with man/woman. The God of the Old and the New Testaments is very clear on the importance of marriage.
