And I did mention to you before that with this series begins the start of the 8th year of these radio programs Virtual Church for the Spiritual Unchurched.

As you already know In this series we look at the four gospels in a new light as they are presented by chronological events taking place within the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John which are presented separately in the Bible ...

It is all the same gospel.... but in chronological order of events taking place, which lets us hear or see side by side who reported and what each said on these events taking place in the gospels.

So, we continue today, with the new series from the book of Deuteronomy in the Old Testament, which is a review by Moses of the previous three books of the Old Testament.

We will begin here right after this opening music, prayer and worship...

Narrative 1

So last week we finished with verse 8 of chapter 20 in the book of Deuteronomy where “Moses gives instructions regarding military service. The army was to put their trust in the Lord, even if they saw that the enemy had horses, chariots and more troops then they had.

“Moses reminds Israel that the Lord would give them victory. Before the army went into battle, the priest was to exhort the soldiers. In modern terminology, these were the chaplains who spoke to the men before they faced possible death.

And if you want to review the last segment of last week's program you can do that on the replay at TimingRevelation.com web site.

So we will now pick up and continue where Moses gives the instruction of when the people of God came near a city to fight against it...

So, verses 10 to 20, still in chapter 20 of the book of Deuteronomy...

v.10_”When thou comest nigh unto a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace unto it.

11 And it shall be, if it make thee answer of peace, and open unto thee, then it shall be, that all the people that is found therein shall be tributaries unto thee, and they shall serve thee.

verse 12_”And if it will make no peace with thee, but will make war against thee, then thou shalt besiege it:

So the Lord told them to offer peace whereby they can live peacefully under the laws of the God of peace and safety. But if they do not accept peace and safety as offered to them, then they are to surround the city in order to capture it or to force it to surrender...

then it continues...

verse 13_”And when the Lord thy God hath delivered it into thine hands, thou shalt smite every male thereof with the edge of the sword:

14 But the women, and the little ones, and the cattle, and all that is in the city, even all the spoil thereof, shalt thou take unto thyself; and thou shalt eat the spoil of thine enemies, which the Lord thy God hath given thee.

15 Thus shalt thou do unto all the cities which are very far off from thee, which are not of the cities of these nations.

So, a lot of people don't like to read about this parts of wars... but as we will see in a moment these people here were totally deprived of goodness, having given themselves to abominations against the God of Creation and turned to “other evil gods”...

so let's continue reading here...

16 But of the cities of these people, which the Lord thy God doth give thee for an inheritance, thou shalt save alive nothing that breatheth:

17 But thou shalt utterly destroy them; namely, -- and here are these people -- the Hittites, and the Amorites, the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee:

So there are all the people who had turned totally against God in total abominations...

18 That they teach you not to do after all their abominations, which they have done unto their gods (small g); so should ye sin against the Lord your God.

So we're talking here about total evil and perverted people who had infested the whole land... those are the ones the God of Creation was fighting against...

And I will read the next 2 verses – 19 and 20 – from the New King James because it is hard to follow in the Old English of the King James version...

19_“When you besiege a city for a long time, while making war against it to take it, you shall not destroy its trees by wielding an ax against them; if you can eat of them, do not cut them down to use in the siege, for the tree of the field is man’s food.

20 Only the trees which you know are not trees for food you may destroy and cut down, to build siegeworks (or defensive walls, etc.) against the city that makes war with you, until it is subdued.”

So that's just another bit of information that is very interesting to read about.

Narrative # 2

Alright so now we move into chapter 21...

...which I will summarize without reading verse by verse because it is complex and so far from anything that could be applied to us today.

But in chapter 21, we read about Moses explaining how a town is to judge a murder that was committed by an unknown person. So when they find a dead person they will begin an investigation of the possible closest city where someone could have been around to do this evil thing.

According to their law, the burden of guilt rested upon that town. So the elders were to take a young cow that had never been worked to a valley that had not been used to raise crops; it had to have a constant flowing running water through it. There the animal would be killed as symbol of what should have happened to the murderer.

Even though the Levites were involved in the ceremony, it was not an expiatory sacrifice. Then the elders of the town were to wash their hands over the animal to symbolize the cleansing of themselves from any suspicion of guild on behalf of the inhabitants of the town. The implication in this ceremony was that no one should take vengeance on the entire town.

And so, skipping over some of the various rules and regulations and laws, we read about how the people are to treat a woman who is taken among the prisoners of war, if one of their men would want her as his wife. It covers the ritual of separating her for 30 days as a sign of cleansing, then living in an Israelite home, certain ceremonial she would follow for another month, etc., all of which would give her the rights to be a daughter of Israel. If for some reason the man did not want her afterall, he was to let her go and was not to sell her as a slave.

Then there were some other laws regarding the children of two different wives and how they were to proceed with the inheritance of the first-born; and other rules concerning the behavior of seriously stubborn – that is two different of their own wives - and rebellious sons... and finally laws about a man who would commit a sin worthy of death, how he would be put to death and bury him the same day....

... all of it to do with how the land was to be not defiled with the abominations of the previous evils. So all this would take us through to the last verses 10 to 23 of chapter 21.

Then in chapter 22 we read concerning the rules and regulations about the handling of one another's animals going astray – such as a sheep or an ox, a donkey, etc... and using this as an opportunity to steal between brothers' belongings.

Then the laws about a woman not to wear clothes that pertain unto a man, neither a man putting on woman's garment, because as it says all this is an abomination unto the Lord they God...

now that's a good place to read for today's problems in that area !

Narrative #3

Then there are laws about how to handle bird's nests that have fallen to the ground and what to do with the mother bird and the youngs...

then rules and regulations about building a house and how to avoid certain accidents if someone should fall from the roof...

and how one should not plow with different animals such as an ox and a donkey together...

then there are rules and regulations about sowing divers seeds so the fruits and other seeds should not be defiled... and even what to wear that should not be garments of different material such as wool and linen together...

Then we read about the laws concerning chastity... and marriage by a man unknowingly to an unchaste woman and how the parents of the damsel and the elders of that city get involved in the sorting out of the dispute, which gets very complicated by the way...

and other types of problems between a man having an affair with another man's wife... so this might be a good teaching for not getting into such situations before God because it doesn't end well for the man... so better to stay away from this sort of out of marriage involvement... the Lord does not like it and does not approve of it... period.

And then in chapter 23, diverse laws and regulations continue concerning exclusivity from the congregation, qualifications of citizenship, laws of sanitation, human relations, and much much more which is worthy of reading but again on your own making notes as to what the Lord expects of people in various types of personal and diversified situations...

And chapters 24, 25, and 26 regarding other types of abominations that Moses reminds the people to stay away from according to past enemies and their evil ways of living.

And all of this here leads into a reflection of how things were to be avoided as per the previous people of the land.

Then there is a passage in chapter 26 regarding the offering of tithes. and ceremonial statutes and judgments.

In chapter 28, about the blessings of obedience, we read this quote:

3 “Blessed shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be in the country.

4 “Blessed shall be the [a]fruit of your body, the produce of your ground and the increase of your herds, the increase of your cattle and the offspring of your flocks.

5 “Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl.

6 “Blessed shall you be when you come in, and blessed shall you be when you go out.

So the Lord here says to Israel that if they keep the commandments, God will set them on high above all nations of the earth and all the blessings listed above will come on them, if they listen unto the voice of their God.

And if they don't listen to the voice of God they will be met with the other side of the blessings...

And in the same chapter, another quote about the consequences of disobedience,
in verses 16 to 19 of chapter 28:

16 “Cursed shall you be in the city, and cursed shall you be in the country.

17 “Cursed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl.

18 “Cursed shall be the [e]fruit of your body and the produce of your land, the increase of your cattle and the offspring of your flocks.

19 “Cursed shall you be when you come in, and cursed shall you be when you go out.

And the scriptures expand under each of the blessings and the cursings which again you can read on your own in a time of your pesonal choice.

Closing Narrative…

Oh how wonderful to appreciate what Jesus has done in our lives to save us from sin by Grace... and how He continues to keep us by His on-going and unlimited Grace...

...that wonderful Grace that comes into our life the moment that we receive Him as for who He is -- the Saviour of mankind and of every individual like you and me personally...

... and this Jesus the Son of God who came to give His life for you and me is the same Jesus who's life we've been reading about in these series of programs right now, and who's death on the cross we will see as we go through the gospel story to where He gave Himself as the sacrificial Lamb of God that took the sin of the world...

...but right now, the question is:

...do you know this Jesus that we're talking about? If you don't know the Lord...

...Just say this prayer, “Lord come into my heart, come into my life, I turn to you right now and ask for forgiveness, I repent of my sins and receive your work on the cross...  I receive your gospel as it was delivered through your blood shed on the cross in my place, and I thank you, Amen...
