So, we continue today in the new series started a few weeks ago, based on my book “The Horizontal Chronology of the Four Gospels”...

And I did mention to you before that with this series begins the start of the 8th year of these radio programs Virtual Church for the Spiritual Unchurched.

As you already know In this series we look at the four gospels in a new light as they are presented by chronological events taking place within the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John which are presented separately in the Bible ...

It is all the same gospel.... but in chronological order of events taking place, which lets us hear or see side by side who reported and what each said on these events taking place in the gospels.

So, we continue today, with the new series from the book of Deuteronomy in the Old Testament, which is a review by Moses of the previous three books of the Old Testament.

We will begin here right after this opening music, prayer and worship...

Narrative 1

Alright, so last week we finished with verse 7 of chapter 17 in the book of Deuteronomy, which dealt with how to handle cases of wickedness committed by the people...

So let's pick up now from verse 8, continuing on judgments of divers kinds...

verses 8 to 13, chapter 17 of the book of Deuteronomy...

v.8_”If there arise a matter too hard for thee in judgment, between blood and blood, between plea and plea, and between stroke and stroke, (the NKJ writes it this way: between degrees of guilt for bloodshed, between one judgment or another, or between one punishment or another) being matters of controversy within thy gates: then shalt thou arise, and get thee up into the place which the Lord thy God shall choose;

v.9_”And thou shalt come unto the priests the Levites, and unto the judge that shall be in those days, and enquire; and they shall shew thee the sentence of judgment:

v.10_”And thou shalt do according to the sentence, which they of that place which the Lord shall choose shall shew thee; and thou shalt observe to do according to all that they inform thee:

v.11_”According to the sentence of the law which they shall teach thee, and according to the judgment which they shall tell thee, thou shalt do: thou shalt not decline from the sentence which they shall shew thee, to the right hand, nor to the left.

So in other words they are to take the difficult cases to the priest who will do the judging on the matter which the people must follow accordingly.

And v. 12 continues... “And the man that will do presumptuously, and will not listen (hearken) unto the priest that standeth to minister there before the Lord thy God, or unto the judge, even that man shall die: and thou shalt put away the evil from Israel.

So again as we saw last week when it comes to the judgment of evil, the consequences were very strong... and that was so that there would be cleansing of evil in the camp. Evil is a potent destroyer of communities. God wants peace and love and care among the people, and evil has to be dealt with accordingly.

The word “presumptuously”, means “to do an action without permission or proper right, characterized by excessive boldness, arrogance, or overconfidence, and often considered rude or sure of oneself...

So again it was not wise to do your own thing... or to deviate from what God told them to do through the appointed judges and priests... you were to follow the judgment and laws of those appointed by God on how to handle criminal matters.

And verse 13, “And all the people shall hear, and fear, and no longer act presumptuously”.

Alright, let's continue with the next verses, 14 to 20, still in chapter 17 of the book of Deuteronomy...

v.14_”When thou art come unto the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee, and shalt possess it, and shalt dwell therein, and shalt say, I will set a king over me, like as all the nations that are about me;

15_”Thou shalt in any wise set him king over thee, whom the Lord thy God shall choose...”

in other words, you shall surely set a king over you whom the Lord your God chooses”,

...”one from among thy brethren shalt thou set king over thee: thou mayest not set a stranger over thee, which is not thy brother.

v.16_”But he shall not multiply horses to himself, nor cause the people to return to Egypt, to the end that he should multiply horses: forasmuch as the Lord hath said unto you, Ye shall henceforth return no more that way.

Read from the NKJ....

v.17_”Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away: neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold.”

oh, remember if you've read the history beyond this point, the people did not follow God's directions and the king they chose did everything that was not as God told them...

we'll see that later on in some other section of the Bible when we get there....

Let's continue, v.18_”And it shall be, when he sitteth upon the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write him a copy of this law in a book out of that which is before the priests the Levites:...”

in other words the king shall write himself a copy of the law and follow it to the letter!

“...v.19_”And it shall be with him, and he shall read therein all the days of his life: that he may learn to fear the Lord his God, to keep all the words of this law and these statutes, to do them:

v.20_”That his heart be not lifted up above his brethren, and that he turn not aside from the commandment, to the right hand, or to the left: to the end that he may prolong his days in his kingdom, he, and his children, in the midst of Israel.

Wow, we can see how just God is and how He wants people to be governed by righteous leaders...

Narrative # 2

Ok, let's move into chapter 18 now and continue on...

we're reading from verses 1 to 8, about the Levites...

verse 1_”The priests the Levites, and all the tribe of Levi, shall have no part nor inheritance with Israel: they shall eat the offerings of the Lord made by fire, and his inheritance.

2 Therefore shall they have no inheritance among their brethren: the Lord is their inheritance, as he hath said unto them.

3 And this shall be the priest's due from the people, from them that offer a sacrifice, whether it be ox or sheep; and they shall give unto the priest the shoulder, and the two cheeks, and the maw. (stomach)”. (So this is to do with the animal sacrifice made unto the Lord).

v.4_”The firstfruit also of thy corn, of thy wine, and of thine oil, and the first of the fleece of thy sheep, shalt thou give him.

5 For the Lord thy God hath chosen him out of all thy tribes, to stand to minister in the name of the Lord, him and his sons for ever.

(add about some saying that Jesus was rich...)?

6 And if a Levite come from any of thy gates out of all Israel, where he sojourned, and come with all the desire of his mind unto the place which the Lord shall choose;

7 Then he shall minister in the name of the Lord his God, as all his brethren the Levites do, which stand there before the Lord.

v.8_”They shall have like portions to eat, beside that which cometh of the sale of his inheritance ( patrimony ) .

and verses 9 to 12,
Warning against heathen practices

v.9 When thou art come into the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations.

10 There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch.

(This is amazing... we have all these even in our days now today. And look what God says about that -- it is an abomination to the Lord)

v.11_”Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.

12 For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord: and because of these abominations the Lord thy God doth drive them out from before thee.

So God says to them that he's driving out the people before them who live there because of those abominations. A lot of people today say how awful it was to kill all these people in that land... well that's why, the land needed to be cleaned of all these abominations they were all steeped into at that time.

v.13_”Thou shalt be perfect with the Lord thy God.” Or, “You shall be blameless before the Lord your God..”

I mean God is very clear.

v.14_(New King James) -- For these nations which you will dispossess listened to soothsayers and diviners; but as for you, the Lord your God has not appointed such for you.”

Narrative #3

Alright, let's move on to the next verses, where the Lord promises a prophet to come to the people...

Verses 15 to 22, still in Deuteronomy chapter 18...

So Moses continues, saying to them:

v.15_”The Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;

16 According to all that thou desiredst of the Lord thy God in Horeb or Sinai in the day of the assembly, saying, Let me not hear again the voice of the Lord my God, neither let me see this great fire any more, that I die not.

Remember back on mount Sinai, they were totally scared and afraid of what they had seen and heard when God came down and spoke to Moses from the mountain...

So Moses continues, v.17_”And the Lord said unto me, They have well spoken that which they have spoken.

18_”I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.

v.19 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.

v.20 But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die.

v.21 And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the Lord hath not spoken?

v.22 When a prophet speaketh in the name of the Lord, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the Lord hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.

Now on the statement “A prophet like me”, the Jewish Voice Study Bible says this:

“The highest authority in the Old Testament Biblical system was not the king or the high priest but the prophet. The context suggests that God would raise up a prophet or prophets in the future when Israel was tempted to engage in the religious practices of their neighbors.” (vs.9-1).

It continues to say that for the Dead Sea Scrolls community this was a prediction about the Messianic age when there would be the anointed one.

Then it continues to refer to the New Testament when Jesus fed the 5,000, the people said of Him, “Surely this is the Prophet” (John 6:14 and other places also). John the Baptist was also asked if he was “the Prophet” they were expecting (John 12).

And in the sermons of Peter and Stephen in the book of Acts, Jesus was proclaimed as the predicted prophet of Deuteronomy (see Acts 3:17-26; 7:37).

So as we can see all of God's people right into the New Testament knew from Old Testament scriptures that an anointed Prophet of God was to come.

Let's take a look at those scriptures right here:

Acts 3, verses 17 to 26:

So this is Peter appealing to the Jews at this time of the book of Acts taking place:

17 And now, brethren, I know (wot) that through ignorance ye did it, as did also your rulers.

18 But those things, which God before had shewed by the mouth of all his prophets, that Christ should suffer, he hath so fulfilled.

19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord.

20 And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you:

21 Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.

22 For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you.

23 And it shall come to pass, that every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people.

24 Yea, and all the prophets from Samuel and those that follow after, as many as have spoken, have likewise foretold of these days.

25 Ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed.

26 Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities.

And Acts 7:37,

This is Stephen when he expounded about their Old Testament prophet Moses on mount Sinai, to the Jews before they so violently killed him:

“This is that Moses, which said unto the children of Israel, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear.

So as we can see in the book of Acts they referred to all of what was said right here in the book of Deuteronomy from the Old Testament.

Closing Narrative…

Oh how wonderful to appreciate what Jesus has done in our lives to save us from sin by Grace... and how He continues to keep us by His on-going and unlimited Grace...

...that wonderful Grace that comes into our life the moment that we receive Him as for who He is -- the Saviour of mankind and of every individual like you and me personally...

... and this Jesus the Son of God who came to give His life for you and me is the same Jesus who's life we've been reading about in these series of programs right now, and who's death on the cross we will see as we go through the gospel story to where He gave Himself as the sacrificial Lamb of God that took the sin of the world...

...but right now, the question is:

...do you know this Jesus that we're talking about? If you don't know the Lord...

...Just say this prayer, “Lord come into my heart, come into my life, I turn to you right now and ask for forgiveness, I repent of my sins and receive your work on the cross...  I receive your gospel as it was delivered through your blood shed on the cross in my place, and I thank you, Amen...
