And I did mention to you before that with this series begins the start of the 8th year of these radio programs Virtual Church for the Spiritual Unchurched.
As you already know In this series we look at the four gospels in a new light as they are presented by chronological events taking place within the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John which are presented separately in the Bible ...
It is all the same gospel.... but in chronological order of events taking place, which lets us hear or see side by side who reported and what each said on these events taking place in the gospels.
So, we continue today, with the new series from the book of Deuteronomy in the Old Testament, which is a review by Moses of the previous three books of the Old Testament.
We will begin here right after this opening music, prayer and worship...

Narrative 1
Alright so we ended last week with the blessings from God for the people's obeying the Lord's commandments, and the cursings from God for disobeying the commandments.
In verse 28 of chapter 12, of the book of Deuteronomy we read: “Observe and hear all these words which I command thee, that it may go well with thee, and with thy children after thee for ever, when thou doest that which is good and right in the sight of the Lord thy God.
So I'm reading from the King James but I'm changing the thees and thous.....
So, in other words all of what and how to do the religious customs and celebrations was given to them for the honouring and worshipping of God the Creator... they couldn't just go and do their own things whenever, wherever and however they wanted... they had to follow what God told them because, all these things of God are sacred...
...as you remember, they had to destroy all the places of worship of other gods (small g) throughout the land they were to possess -- all the altars and pillars and groves and graven images and burn it all down... that's why God gave them instructions on how to worship their true God, so they would not fall into the same abominations that existed throughout the land,
v.10_”But when ye go over Jordan, and dwell in the land which the Lord your God giveth you to inherit, and when he giveth you rest from all your enemies round about, so that ye dwell in safety;
11_”Then there shall be a place which the Lord your God shall choose to cause his name to dwell there; thither shall ye bring all that I command you; your burnt offerings, and your sacrifices, your tithes, and the heave offering of your hand, and all your choice vows which ye vow unto the Lord:
12 _”And ye shall rejoice before the Lord your God, ye, and your sons, and your daughters, and your menservants, and your maidservants, and the Levite that is within your gates; forasmuch as he hath no part nor inheritance with you.
13_”Take heed to thyself that thou offer not thy burnt offerings in every place that thou seest:
14_”But in the place which the Lord shall choose in one of thy tribes, there thou shalt offer thy burnt offerings, and there thou shalt do all that I command thee.
So we will now finish chapter 12 of the book of Deuteronomy, picking up from verse 29 to 32 which now deals with a warnings against idolatry...
29_"When the Lord thy God shall cut off the nations from before thee, whither thou goest to possess them, and thou succeedest them, and dwellest in their land;
30 Take heed to thyself that thou be not snared by following them, after that they be destroyed from before thee; and that thou enquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods? even so will I do likewise.
In other words....
31 Thou shalt not do so unto the Lord thy God: for every abomination to the Lord, which he hateth, have they done unto their gods; for even their sons and their daughters they have burnt in the fire to their gods.
So again, they were burning.....
32 What thing soever I command you, observe to do it: thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it.
So as we can see the pattern of cleaning up the lands of idolatry was going to be a regular occupancy as the Lord was going to deliver them from these abominations, as they would be entering into all the nations God took them through....

Narrative # 2
Alright let's continue with the unpleasant but necessary task to get rid of the idolatry that had infested the land all these generations...
Let's read Chapter 13 of Deuteronomy,
verses 1 to 11:
1_”If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder,
2_”And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods (small g), which thou hast not known, and let us serve them;
3_”Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the Lord your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.
4_”Ye shall walk after the Lord your God, and fear him, and keep his commandments, and obey his voice, and ye shall serve him, and cleave unto him.
5_”And that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams, shall be put to death; because he hath spoken to turn you away from the Lord your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, to thrust thee out of the way which the Lord thy God commanded thee to walk in. So shalt thou put the evil away from the midst of thee.
So as I said, I'm reading from the King James, but changing the “ye and thou” into “you and yours as I go along...
6_”If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, which is as thine own soul, entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers;
7_”Namely, of the gods of the people which are round about you, nigh unto thee, or far off from thee, from the one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth;
8_”Thou shalt not consent unto him, nor hearken unto him; neither shall thine eye pity him, neither shalt thou spare, neither shalt thou conceal him:
9_”But thou shalt surely kill him; thine hand shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people.
10_”And thou shalt stone him with stones, that he die; because he hath sought to thrust thee away from the Lord thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.
11_”And all Israel shall hear, and fear, and shall do no more any such wickedness as this is among you.
So, wow that was pretty heavy... but it was their life... because once they turned to wickedness they were turning themselves to demons who had possessed the people and this was taking their lives...
... this sin was so awful so grave that God told the people to stone the deceiver to death! The Liberty Bible Commentary says that the people were commanded to put to death the false prophets who preached apostasy.... Israel is charged not to tolerate the false prophet, nor to hide him in the village. If the false prophet enticed them secretly they were to not keep the temptation concealed but to bring it out in the open before the whole congregation for total punishment.
And now, what to do with the idolatrous cities of the land
verses 12 to 18 of Deuteronomy:
12 If thou shalt hear say in one of thy cities, which the Lord thy God hath given thee to dwell there, saying,
13 Certain men, the children of Belial, are gone out from among you, and have withdrawn the inhabitants of their city, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which ye have not known;
14 Then shalt thou enquire, and make search, and ask diligently; and, behold, if it be truth, and the thing certain, that such abomination is wrought among you;
15 Thou shalt surely smite the inhabitants of that city with the edge of the sword, destroying it utterly, and all that is therein, and the cattle thereof, with the edge of the sword.
16 And thou shalt gather all the spoil of it into the midst of the street thereof, and shalt burn with fire the city, and all the spoil thereof every whit, for the Lord thy God: and it shall be an heap for ever; it shall not be built again.
17 And there shall cleave nought of the cursed thing to thine hand: that the Lord may turn from the fierceness of his anger, and shew thee mercy, and have compassion upon thee, and multiply thee, as he hath sworn unto thy fathers;
18 When thou shalt hearken to the voice of the Lord thy God, to keep all his commandments which I command thee this day, to do that which is right in the eyes of the Lord thy God.
Ok so what does that all mean...
God – through Moses – instructs the people on how to deal with a town that is led into idolatry. So that's after they've taken the land. The reference to Belial denotes all that is wicked and implies an instigator of uncleanness...
... now when a town or village was accused of worshipping idols, Israel was to judge and investigate diligently. If the report was found to be true, they were to destroy everything utterly with the sword, without taking any spoil nor keeping any treasures from the city...
... all was to be burned completely as a whole offering unto the Lord. The remaining heap was to be an eternal hill to be seen by all outsiders who would then be reminded of God's judgment on idolatry

Narrative #3
Alright let's now take a look at chapter 14
and we'll start with verses 1 to 21
and I will read this in the New King James because the old King James gets a little difficult in some of the extinct animals and descriptions and so on...
v.1_“You are the children of the Lord your God; you shall not cut yourselves nor shave the front of your head for the dead.
... and of course some of these things that are foreign to us were actually done by heathens like disfiguring their bodies and looks, which God forbids them to do. Israel was a called out holy people to represent a holy God before other nations. So they were to do as God instructed them to do in their customs pertaining to foods and and living.
2 For you are a holy people to the Lord your God, and the Lord has chosen you to be a people for Himself, a special treasure above all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.
So Clean and Unclean Meat
3 "You shall not eat any detestable thing.
4 These are the animals which you may eat: the ox, the sheep, the goat,
5 the deer, the gazelle, the roe deer, the wild goat, the mountain goat, the antelope, and the mountain sheep.
6 And you may eat every animal with cloven hooves, having the hoof split into two parts, and that chews the cud, among the animals.
7 Nevertheless, of those that chew the cud or have cloven hooves, you shall not eat, such as these: the camel, the hare, and the rock hyrax; for they chew the cud but do not have cloven hooves; they are unclean for you.
8 Also the swine is unclean for you, because it has cloven hooves, yet does not chew the cud; you shall not eat their flesh or touch their dead carcasses."
9 “These you may eat of all that are in the waters: you may eat all that have fins and scales.
10 And whatever does not have fins and scales you shall not eat; it is unclean for you.
11 “All clean birds you may eat.
12 But these you shall not eat: the eagle, the vulture, the buzzard,
13 the red kite, the falcon, and the kite after their kinds;
14 every raven after its kind;
15 the ostrich, the short-eared owl, the sea gull, and the hawk after their kinds;
16 the little owl, the screech owl, the white owl,
17 the jackdaw, the carrion vulture, the fisher owl,
18 the stork, the heron after its kind, and the hoopoe (an extinct bird I guess) and the bat."
19 “Also every creeping thing that flies is unclean for you; they shall not be eaten.
20 You may eat all clean birds.
21 “You shall not eat anything that dies of itself; you may give it to the alien who is within your gates, that he may eat it, or you may sell it to a foreigner; for you are a holy people to the Lord your God.
You shall not boil a young goat in its mother’s milk."
Now ok, some of you might say why read this today? Well, two things:
1) It's intersting how God had specific things about eating or not eating certain animals animals,
2) some of these may be good instruction for today – like for example “bats”, I'm glad God said not to eat bats ! Of that we have not been doing so, but just an example... what about the eagle, the vulture, the buzzard...I'm glad that's in here too... and we are not eating those that we know of... and the same for many other animals that are not to be eaten...
So, it's a good thing to follow what God has told us because He knows best what's good and not good for us...
anyway, we'll move on to the next scriptures, right after this:
Music Interlude...
and... it looks like we've ran out of time and will have to pick up the next segment next week...
yes we are but pilgrims here in this life... and some 3,000 years ago there was another group of people who were pilgrims also... and these are those we've been reading about in this amazing book of Deuteronomy which as you recall is a review of the 4 previous books of the jewish torah... although times have changed a lot of things and customs, and so on, one of the most amazing promise was the one about the Saviour to come, the Messiah...
and we've already witnessed that 2,000 years ago.... all of which was written for us in our faithful Bible or the Word of God... it's all about that Saviour the hymns are speaking about.... “On Jordan's Stormy Banks I Stand”, is a wonderful reminder of where we come from and where we're going as pilgrims... we should sing those beautiful proclamations more in today's churches... we are missing a lot of soul reaching by leaving them behind...
But yes you and I are bound for the promised land – the final leg of our journey as pilgrims... soon we are going to see the Lord and the journey from this temporary to eternity is to begin... how do we know? Because we have put our trust in Jesus who came to redeem His people from sin... yes this sin-sick world... has been washed in the blood of the previous Saviour giving His earthly temporary life for each one of us...
have you trusted the Lord, have you received the free gift of Salvation from Him yet?
Closing Narrative…
Oh how wonderful to appreciate what Jesus has done in our lives to save us from sin by Grace... and how He continues to keep us by His on-going and unlimited Grace...
...that wonderful Grace that comes into our life the moment that we receive Him as for who He is -- the Saviour of mankind and of every individual like you and me personally...
... and this Jesus the Son of God who came to give His life for you and me is the same Jesus who's life we've been reading about in these series of programs right now, and who's death on the cross we will see as we go through the gospel story to where He gave Himself as the sacrificial Lamb of God that took the sin of the world...
...but right now, the question is:
...do you know this Jesus that we're talking about? If you don't know the Lord...
...Just say this prayer, “Lord come into my heart, come into my life, I turn to you right now and ask for forgiveness, I repent of my sins and receive your work on the cross... I receive your gospel as it was delivered through your blood shed on the cross in my place, and I thank you, Amen...
