And I did mention to you before that with this series begins the start of the 8th year of these radio programs Virtual Church for the Spiritual Unchurched.
As you already know In this series we look at the four gospels in a new light as they are presented by chronological events taking place within the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John which are presented separately in the Bible ...
It is all the same gospel.... but in chronological order of events taking place, which lets us hear or see side by side who reported and what each said on these events taking place in the gospels.
So, we continue today, with the new series from the book of Deuteronomy in the Old Testament, which is a review by Moses of the previous three books of the Old Testament.
We will begin here right after this opening music, prayer and worship...

Narrative 1
Alright so let's pick up from where we finished last week and get right into chapter 7 about the blessings of obedience...
So chapter 7, verses 1 to 5:
And I am reading from the New King James Bible...
“When the Lord your God brings you into the land which you go to possess and has cast out many nations before you, the Hittites and the Girgashites and the Amorites and the Canaanites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than you,
2 and when the Lord your God delivers them over to you, you shall conquer them and utterly destroy them. You shall make no covenant with them nor show mercy to them.
3 Nor shall you make marriages with them. You shall not give your daughter to their son, nor take their daughter for your son.
4 For they will turn your sons away from following Me, to serve other gods; so the anger of the Lord will be aroused against you and destroy you suddenly.
5 But thus you shall deal with them: you shall destroy their altars, and break down their sacred pillars, and cut down their wooden images, and burn their carved images with fire.
Verses 6 to 11:
A holy people to the Lord
6 “For you are a holy people to the Lord your God; the Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for Himself, a special treasure above all the peoples on the face of the earth.
Now that is very interesting.
7 The Lord did not set His love on you nor choose you because you were more in number than any other people, for you were the least of all peoples;
8 but because the Lord loves you, and because He would keep the oath which He swore to your fathers, the Lord has brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you from the house of bondage, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.
9 “Therefore know that the Lord your God, He is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and mercy for a thousand generations with those who love Him and keep His commandments;
10 and He repays those who hate Him to their face, to destroy them. He will not be slack with him who hates Him; He will repay him to his face.
11 Therefore you shall keep the commandment, the statutes, and the judgments which I command you today, to observe them.
And verses 12 to 16:
The condition of God's covenant with the people
12 “Then it shall come to pass, because you listen to these judgments, and keep and do them, that the Lord your God will keep with you the covenant and the mercy which He swore to your fathers.
So in other words – God will keep His covenant and mercy with the people on the condition that they keep and do the commandments of God...
13 And He will love you and bless you and multiply you; He will also bless the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your land, your grain and your new wine and your oil, the increase of your cattle and the offspring of your flock, in the land of which He swore to your fathers to give you.
14 You shall be blessed above all peoples; there shall not be a male or female barren among you or among your livestock.
15 And the Lord will take away from you all sickness, and will afflict you with none of the terrible diseases of Egypt which you have known, but will lay them on all those who hate you.
16 Also you shall destroy all the peoples whom the Lord your God delivers over to you; your eye shall have no pity on them; nor shall you serve their gods, for that will be a snare to you.

Narrative # 2
So let's continue on the condition of God's covenant with the people
Verses 17 to 20:
17 “If you should say in your heart, ‘These nations are greater than I; how can I dispossess them?’—
18 you shall not be afraid of them, but you shall remember well what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt:
19 the great trials which your eyes saw, the signs and the wonders, the mighty hand and the outstretched arm, by which the Lord your God brought you out. So shall the Lord your God do to all the peoples of whom you are afraid.
20 Moreover the Lord your God will send the hornet among them until those who are left, who hide themselves from you, are destroyed.
Wow imagine that! God will oust them out of their hiding places with hornets... God can do anything... just think of all the times that God has done something in your life that, in the natural, was impossible... I call this a “hornet” moment !
And verses 21 to 26 of chapter 7:
21 You shall not be terrified of them; for the Lord your God, the great and awesome God, is among you.
22 And the Lord your God will drive out those nations before you little by little; you will be unable to destroy them at once, lest the beasts of the field become too numerous for you.
(In other words the beasts would multiply and take over the land).
23 But the Lord your God will deliver them over to you, and will inflict defeat upon them until they are destroyed.
24 And He will deliver their kings into your hand, and you will destroy their name from under heaven; no one shall be able to stand against you until you have destroyed them.
25 You shall burn the carved images of their gods with fire; you shall not covet the silver or gold that is on them, nor take it for yourselves, lest you be snared by it; for it is an abomination to the Lord your God.
26 Nor shall you bring an abomination into your house, lest you be doomed to destruction like it. You shall utterly detest it and utterly abhor it, for it is an accursed thing.
Again, in light of what we see going on today – 3,000 years later – God not only gave the land to the Israelites, but they had to fight for it against the most fearful anti-god and demonic people who lived at that time. But God was with them and gave them victory over all the odds of history.
That's what happens when people turn away from God... we were made for God, and when we turn from God demons take over.
I like what it says in “The Transformer” a New King James Version Bible written for young adults... it says this:
“Our major decision to enter God's family determines all our choices and relationships thereafter.
“We don't have to worry about whether or not to follow the crowd, because if the crowd is not in God's will, following them is no longer an option for us.
“Everybody's doing it” (quote unquote) just doesn't hold water anymore. We don't have to wallow in loneliness when we are rejected or when friendships fail because God is always with us and He is always loving us.
Regardless of our situation, knowing we are His possession provides us with self-worth. Being a part of God's own family – that's true belonging.” (Emphasis on the word true.-- that's true belonging.)

Narrative #3
Yes there was a good land to be possessed... but there were warnings against forgetting the Lord...
You see the beauty of reading these scripttures and stories in the Old Testament is that they apply to us today just as much as then... all the background history is important – crucial actually – to our knowledge and understanding and appreciation of what we know and learn in the new testament todat....
Let's move on...
chapter 8 verses 1 to 5:
“Every commandment which I command you today you must be careful to observe, that you may live and multiply, and go in and possess the land of which the Lord swore to your fathers.
2 And you shall remember that the Lord your God led you all the way these forty years in the wilderness, to humble you and test you - wow to humble you and test you -- know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not.
What a test that was -- look at what's happening today... we need to be humbled – again!
Verse 3, “So He humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord.
Remember Jesus quoted from this verse later on in the New Testament in Matthew 4, right at the beginning of His ministry when He was tempted in the wilderness by the devil... He replied, “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”
Wow, look at the meaning of this for us today, to know that Jesus in the New Testament some 3000 years later quoted that very scripture. It really makes you think deeper about the living Word of God from beginning to end.
Let's continue, verse 4, “Your garments did not wear out on you, nor did your foot swell these forty years.
5 You should know in your heart that as a man chastens his son, so the Lord your God chastens you.
Verses 6 to 10:
6 “Therefore you shall keep the commandments of the Lord your God, to walk in His ways and to fear Him.
So “therefore” here is very important – it always is... it bridges something that was said before that is a warning... and then it says 'therefore you shall do this or you shall do that' ...
7 “For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, that flow out of valleys and hills;
... and folks that's the land we're heading for right now – the new land, the new millennium...
8 “a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive oil and honey;
9 “a land in which you will eat bread without scarcity, in which you will lack nothing; a land whose stones are iron and out of whose hills you can dig copper.
10 When you have eaten and are full, then you shall bless the Lord your God for the good land which He has given you.
Wow... and look at it today... how Israel is struggling against enemies... this right here could be a whole study in it's own... the same goes for America just a few generations ago when it was discovered, and God was honoured in families, schools, in the fields, in the work place ... but now struggling against enemies of God...
...why? Because people have forgotten the God of Creation.

Narrative 4
So let's go on, now reading about how people get where they are now:
verses 11 to 17,
Warnings against forgetting the Lord:
11 “Beware that you do not forget the Lord your God by not keeping His commandments, His judgments, and His statutes which I command you today,
12 lest—when you have eaten and are full, and have built beautiful houses and dwell in them;
13 and when your herds and your flocks multiply, and your silver and your gold are multiplied, and all that you have is multiplied;
14 when your heart is lifted up, and you forget the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage;
and of course the land of Egypt today is always referring to the world of sin that we come out of when we come to the Lord...
15 who led you through that great and terrible wilderness, in which were fiery serpents and scorpions and thirsty land where there was no water; who brought water for you out of the flinty rock;
16 who fed you in the wilderness with manna, which your fathers did not know, that He might humble you and that He might test you, to do you good in the end—
and we saw that earlier as well...
17 then you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gained me this wealth.’
In other words we say that “we did it” all by ourselves and give no credit or glory to the Lord our God!
And verses 18 to 20:
18 “And you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day.
In other word, God swore to establish His covenant BUT people buck against it all the way, constantly interfering and disrupting God's plan.
Verse 19, “Then it shall be, if you by any means forget the Lord your God, and follow other gods (small g), and serve them and worship them, I testify against you this day that you shall surely perish.
20 As the nations which the Lord destroys before you, so you shall perish, because you would not be obedient to the voice of the Lord your God.
And we will continue from here next week about how God is fighting for the people and giving them the land, not because of their righteousness but for the wickedness of the nations who had turned against God...
for example, here's what God says
in v. 6 and 7 of chapter 9...
“Therefore understand that the Lord your God is not giving you this good land to possess because of your righteousness, for you are a stiff-necked people.
(stiff-neck refers to turning your back on someone as in being stubborn, hard or difficult.)
“Remember! Do not forget how you provoked the Lord your God to wrath in the wilderness. From the day that you departed from the land of Egypt until you came to this place, you have been rebellious against the Lord.”
and again I must say that this goes for us today also... it's been the same over and over throughout generations ... look at the book of Judges, up and down like a roller coaster – they turn to God and then next thing you know in forty years they're down in the mud again serving the demon again...
look at us today, do you remember 40 yrs ago, how different it was... who would have thought about these things going on today... prayers taken out of schools, people living promiscuous lives... marriage no longer honoured... abortions going on by the millions—by the millions... politics – well we won't go there...
but yes we are just like those peoples of old... Jesus said in the last days it would be like in the time of Noah... how was it then? Read chapter 6 of the book of Genesis... and the same has been going on throughout history...
But, there is reason to rejoice, the Lord is coming back in person again soon and very soon...
Closing Narrative…
Oh how wonderful to appreciate what Jesus has done in our lives to save us from sin by Grace... and how He continues to keep us by His on-going and unlimited Grace...
...that wonderful Grace that comes into our life the moment that we receive Him as for who He is -- the Saviour of mankind and of every individual like you and me personally...
... and this Jesus the Son of God who came to give His life for you and me is the same Jesus who's life we've been reading about in these series of programs right now, and who's death on the cross we will see as we go through the gospel story to where He gave Himself as the sacrificial Lamb of God that took the sin of the world...
...but right now, the question is:
...do you know this Jesus that we're talking about? If you don't know the Lord...
...Just say this prayer, “Lord come into my heart, come into my life, I turn to you right now and ask for forgiveness, I repent of my sins and receive your work on the cross... I receive your gospel as it was delivered through your blood shed on the cross in my place, and I thank you, Amen...
