Opening Narrative

Hello and welcome to another exciting radio program today on end times and prophecies and scriptures to live by... which is all about old-time gospel and worship music, praying for needs and preaching the Word of God....

And remember this radio programs Virtual Church for the Spiritual Unchurched is broadcast every Sunday at 7 am and 7 pm pacific time... and if you unfortunately miss it for whatever reason at any time, you can hear the program any time after that for 4 weeks...at my web site TimingRevelation.com

So, we continue today in the new series started a few weeks ago, based on my book “The Horizontal Chronology of the Four Gospels”...

And I did mention to you before that with this series begins the start of the 8th year of these radio programs Virtual Church for the Spiritual Unchurched.

As you already know In this series we look at the four gospels in a new light as they are presented by chronological events taking place within the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John which are presented separately in the Bible ...

It is all the same gospel.... but in chronological order of events taking place, which lets us hear or see side by side who reported and what each said on these events taking place in the gospels.

So, we continue today, with the new series from the book of Deuteronomy in the Old Testament, which is a review by Moses of the previous three books of the Old Testament.

We will begin here right after this opening music, prayer and worship...

Narrative 1

Alright so we ended last week with

chapter 3, verses 12 to 14:

12_"And this land, which we possessed at that time, from Aroer, which is by the river Arnon, and half mount Gilead, and the cities thereof, gave I unto the Reubenites and to the Gadites.

13_"And the rest of Gilead, and all Bashan, being the kingdom of Og, gave I unto the half tribe of Manasseh; all the region of Argob, with all Bashan, which was called the land of giants.

14_"Jair the son of Manasseh took all the country of Argob unto the coasts of Geshuri and Maachathi (Mah-ak-aw); and called them after his own name, Bashanhavothjair (Bashan-yavo_jair), unto this day.

(and of course “this day” is speaking of the year 1,410 BC in which we are still reading about ).

15_"And I gave Gilead unto Machir.

And we saw that Machir was the oldest son of Manassah -- His name appears 22 times in the Bible in books both before and after Deuteromy – actually mostly in the books after Deuteronomy – like Joshua, Judges, Samuel and Chronicles --

so lots of history to be read about on all of these names that we read in these books of Moses – all with fascinating stories.

So today we pick up from here and continue our journey through toward the promised land.

This will take us to the outline #2 about the exhortation given by Moses to the Israelites about obeying their Lord God... which is very interesting, as we will see...

So the outline of the book of Deuteronomy if you remember is:

let's take a look again:

#1_Remember (chapters 1 to 4)

#2_Obey (chapters 5 to 27)

#3_Take Heed (chapters 28 to 34)

Right now let's continue from where we left off last week in chapter 3 from verse 16:

So the last verse we read last week was v. 15:

15_”And I gave Gilead unto Machir.

Now the next verse, verse 16:

v. 16_”And unto the Reubenites and unto the Gadites I gave from Gilead even unto the river Arnon half the valley, and the border even unto the river Jabbok, which is the border of the children of Ammon;

17_"The plain also, and Jordan, and the coast thereof, from Chinnereth (K...) even unto the sea of the plain, even the salt sea, under Ashdothpisgah (Ashadaw-pisgah) eastward.

And the rest here I will read from the New King James Bible...

18_"Then I commanded you at that time, saying: ‘The Lord your God has given you this land to possess. All you men of valor shall cross over armed before (ahead of) your brethren, the children of Israel.

19_"But your wives, your little ones, and your livestock (I know that you have much livestock) shall stay in your cities which I have given you,

20_"until the Lord has given rest to your brethren as to you, and they also possess the land which the Lord your God is giving them beyond the Jordan. Then each of you may return to his possession which I have given you.’

21_"And I commanded Joshua at that time, saying, ‘Your eyes have seen all that the Lord your God has done to these two kings; so will the Lord do to all the kingdoms through which you pass.

22_"You must not fear them, for the Lord your God Himself fights for you.’

Moses Forbidden to Enter the Land

23_"Then I pleaded with the Lord at that time, saying:

24_" ‘O Lord God, You have begun to show Your servant Your greatness and Your mighty hand, for what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do anything like Your works and Your mighty deeds?

25_"I pray, let me cross over and see the good land beyond the Jordan, those pleasant mountains, and Lebanon.’ And of course this this is Moses speaking to God...

26_"But the Lord was angry with me on your account, (speaking to the people) and would not listen to me. So the Lord said to me: ‘Enough of that! Speak no more to Me of this matter.

27_"Go up to the top of Pisgah, and lift your eyes toward the west, the north, the south, and the east; behold it with your eyes, for you shall not cross over this Jordan.

And of course here they are on the east side of Jordan... they will be crossing ..........

28_"But command Joshua, and encourage him and strengthen him; for he shall go over before this people, (or ahead of this people), and he shall cause them to inherit the land which you will see.’

29_"So we stayed in the valley opposite Beth Peor.

And this is the end of chapter 3.

So in the next chapter, we will begin to read from our outline #2 about God's expectations of the people of God about how they are to obey the Lord and live righteously before Him.. -- and that's our #2 outline that is called “obey”... and we'll see that right after this...

Narrative # 2

Chapter 4, verses 1 to 8

Moses' exhortation to obedience:

1_”Now therefore hearken, O Israel, unto the statutes and unto the judgments, which I teach you, for to do them, that ye may live, and go in and possess the land which the Lord God of your fathers giveth you.

2_"Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you.

3_"Your eyes have seen what the Lord did because of Baalpeor: for all the men that followed Baalpeor, the Lord thy God hath destroyed them from among you.

4_"But ye that did cleave unto the Lord your God are alive every one of you this day.

5_"Behold, I have taught you statutes and judgments, even as the Lord my God commanded me, that ye should do so in the land whither ye go to possess it.

6_"Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, which shall hear all these statutes, and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.

Wow... this is interesting.... so Moses is telling them that they get wisdom and understanding through the word of God ... and it's the same for us today...

verse 7_”For what nation is there so great, who hath God so nigh unto them, as the Lord our God is in all things that we call upon him for?

Boy these are good words for us .....

verse 8_”And what nation is there so great, that hath statutes and judgments so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day?

Oh that our leaders would feel that way...

Verses 9 to 14,-- still in chapter 4:

Israel's experiences at Horeb –

Moses reminds the people of what happened to them in Horeb:

9_”Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life: but teach them thy sons, and thy sons' sons;

10_”Specially the day that thou stoodest before the Lord thy God in Horeb, when the Lord said unto me, Gather me the people together, and I will make them hear my words, that they may learn to fear me all the days that they shall live upon the earth, and that they may teach their children.

11_”And ye came near and stood under the mountain; and the mountain burned with fire unto the midst of heaven, with darkness, clouds, and thick darkness.

12_”And the Lord spake unto you out of the midst of the fire: ye heard the voice(sound) of the words, but saw no similitude (form); only ye heard a voice.

13_”And he declared unto you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, even (that is) ten commandments; and he wrote them upon two tables of stone.

- - and of course Moses is referring to that great encounter of God that took place at Mount Sinai – and the result of it when the people made the golden Calf to worship...

14vAnd the Lord commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and judgments, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go over to possess it.

you see, what we read in the old testament applies to us also today... what God told His people, He tells us also – because we are His people and everything that God says in the Old and the New Testaments is for all of us throughout history... we are all God's people today! Some of us love Him, obey Him... but some of us don't and it's not hard to figure out who's does and who doesn't...

So here's a tremendous amount of further information and details for us on this particular awesome event that took place earlier back at that time...

Then Moses warns the people against idolatry... and we'll go there right after this:

Narrative #3

Alright so, let's go on,

verse 15 of chapter 4...

Warning against idolatry:

15_"Take ye therefore good heed unto yourselves (so listen carefully); for ye saw no manner of form on the day that the Lord spake unto you in Horeb out of the midst of the fire:

and remember Horeb is the same as Sinai – it's just another name...

16_"Lest ye corrupt yourselves, and make you a graven image, the similitude of any figure, the likeness of male or female,

--So this is very interesting... God did not show himself in an type of form because it would be taken as a form to make for worship... in other words, the people – as they always did – would make a physical form of what they saw and begin to worship that thing that they made with their hands rather than the God who is and who created them ..

so let's continue with what Moses is telling them....

... so listen carefully... for ye saw no manner of similitude (or no form) on the day that the Lord spake unto you in Horeb out of the midst of the fire...

verse 16... Lest ye corrupt yourselves, and make you a graven image...

So God is forbidding them to make any type of form or figure, or image that they would worship...

again v. 16: Lest ye corrupt yourselves, and make you a graven image, the similitude of any figure, the likeness of male or female,

...(17) The likeness of any beast that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged fowl that flieth in the air,

...(18) The likeness of any thing that creepeth on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the waters beneath the earth:

19_"And lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun, and the moon, and the stars, even all the host of heaven, shouldest be driven to worship them, and serve them, which the Lord thy God hath divided unto all nations under the whole heaven.”

You see, God knew their weakness – the weakness of mankind to worship “things” and corrupt themselves to worshipping those things, that they made, rather than the God of Creation only...

and the next verse reminds them of what God Himself has done for them...

verse 20_”But the Lord hath taken you, and brought you forth out of the iron furnace, even out of Egypt, to be unto him a people of inheritance, as ye are this day.

21_"Furthermore the Lord was angry with me for your sakes, and sware that I should not go over Jordan, and that I should not go in unto that good land, which the Lord thy God giveth thee for an inheritance:

Moses reminds them that their disobedience to God puts the leader in a bad place also...

So, furthermore the Lord was angry with me for your sakes, and sware that I should not go over Jordan, and that I should not go in unto that good land, which the Lord thy God giveth thee for an inheritance:

22_"But I must die in this land, I must not go over Jordan: but ye shall go over, and possess that good land.

So Moses says that because they didn't listen to their leader -- who was getting his instructions from God – now he is being punished for their sakes...

23_"Take heed unto yourselves, lest ye forget the covenant of the Lord your God, which he made with you, and make you a graven image, or the likeness of any thing, which the Lord thy God hath forbidden thee.

24_"For the Lord thy God is a consuming fire, even a jealous God.

So, Moses is saying don't say that I haven't warned you...

verse, 25_”When thou shalt beget children, and children's children, and ye shall have remained long in the land, and shall corrupt yourselves, and make a graven image, or the likeness of any thing, and shall do evil in the sight of the Lord thy God, to provoke him to anger:

26_"I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that ye shall soon utterly perish from off the land whereunto ye go over Jordan to possess it; ye shall not prolong your days upon it, but shall utterly be destroyed.

In other words Moses is calling heaven and earth as witness that he has warned them of these things...

verse 27_”And the Lord shall scatter you among the nations, and ye shall be left few in number among the heathen, whither the Lord shall lead you.

28 And there ye shall serve gods (small g), the work of men's hands, wood and stone, which neither see, nor hear, nor eat, nor smell.

In other words, this is what will happen to them if they do turn against God and worship other things – or their own achievements being of themselves rather then being from God.

Verse 29_”But if from thence(there) thou shalt seek the Lord thy God, thou shalt find him, if thou seek him with all thy heart and with all thy soul. Wow... that is amazing.

30_"When thou art in tribulation, and all these things are come upon thee, even (that is) in the latter days, if thou turn to the Lord thy God, and shalt be obedient unto his voice;

31_"(For the Lord thy God is a merciful God;) he will not forsake thee, neither destroy thee, nor forget the covenant of thy fathers which he sware unto them.

Now watch this – listen to what Moses tells them next:

(New King James):

32_"For ask now concerning the days that are past, which were before you,
since the day that God created man on the earth,

and ask from one end of heaven to the other, whether any great thing like this has happened, or anything like it has been heard.

33_"Did any people ever hear the voice of God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as you have heard, and live?

34_"Or did God ever try to go and take for Himself a nation from the midst of another nation, by trials, by signs, by wonders, by war, by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, and by great terrors, according to all that the Lord your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes?

35_"To you it was shown, that you might know that the Lord Himself is God; there is none other besides Him.

-- again that all goes for us today as we are God's people... those who follow Him and His commandments....

36_"Out of heaven He let you hear His voice, that He might instruct you; on earth He showed you His great fire, and you heard His words out of the midst of the fire.

37_"And because He loved your fathers, therefore He chose their descendants after them; and He brought you out of Egypt with His Presence, with His mighty power,

38_"driving out from before you nations greater and mightier than you, to bring you in, to give you their land as an inheritance, as it is this day.

39_"Therefore know this day, and consider it in your heart, that the Lord Himself is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath; there is no other.

40_"You shall therefore keep His statutes and His commandments which I command you today, that it may go well with you and with your children after you, and that you may prolong your days in the land which the Lord your God is giving you for all time.”

Wow, that is amazing... that's what Moses told the Israelites.... and we, today, ought to receive that as well... and recognize it.

Closing Narrative…

Oh how wonderful to appreciate what Jesus has done in our lives to save us from sin by Grace... and how He continues to keep us by His on-going and unlimited Grace...

...that wonderful Grace that comes into our life the moment that we receive Him as for who He is -- the Saviour of mankind and of every individual like you and me personally...

... and this Jesus the Son of God who came to give His life for you and me is the same Jesus who's life we've been reading about in these series of programs right now, and who's death on the cross we will see as we go through the gospel story to where He gave Himself as the sacrificial Lamb of God that took the sin of the world...

...but right now, the question is:

...do you know this Jesus that we're talking about? If you don't know the Lord...

...Just say this prayer, “Lord come into my heart, come into my life, I turn to you right now and ask for forgiveness, I repent of my sins and receive your work on the cross...  I receive your gospel as it was delivered through your blood shed on the cross in my place, and I thank you, Amen...
