Opening Narrative

Hello and welcome to another exciting radio program today on end times and prophecies and scriptures to live by... which is all about old-time gospel and worship music, praying for needs and preaching the Word of God....

And remember this radio programs Virtual Church for the Spiritual Unchurched is broadcast every Sunday at 7 am and 7 pm pacific time... and if you unfortunately miss it for whatever reason at any time, you can hear the program any time after that for 4 weeks...at my web site TimingRevelation.com

So, we continue today in the new series started a few weeks ago, based on my book “The Horizontal Chronology of the Four Gospels”...

And I did mention to you before that with this series begins the start of the 8th year of these radio programs Virtual Church for the Spiritual Unchurched.

As you already know In this series we look at the four gospels in a new light as they are presented by chronological events taking place within the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John which are presented separately in the Bible ...

It is all the same gospel.... but in chronological order of events taking place, which lets us hear or see side by side who reported and what each said on these events taking place in the gospels.

So, we continue today, with the new series from the book of Deuteronomy in the Old Testament, which is a review by Moses of the previous three books of the Old Testament.

We will begin here right after this opening music, prayer and worship...

Narrative 1

Alright so let's just do a quick review of the last verses of chapter 1 of the book of Deuteronomy that we ended with last week...

...where the story ends with the defeat of Israel at Hormah, because the people had disobeyed the Lord's instructions...

verse 41_“Then you answered and said to me, ‘We have sinned against the Lord; we will go up and fight, just as the Lord our God commanded us. And when everyone of you had girded on his weapons of war, you were ready to go up into the mountain.

42_“And the Lord said to me, ‘Tell them, “Do not go up nor fight, for I am not among you; lest you be defeated before your enemies.” ’

43_“So I spoke to you; yet you would not listen, but rebelled against the command of the Lord, and presumptuously went up into the mountain.

44_“And the Amorites who dwelt in that mountain came out against you and chased you as bees do, and drove you back from Seir to Hormah.

And verse 45_”Then you returned and wept before the Lord, but the Lord would not listen to your voice nor give ear to you.

So in other words, when God told them to go ahead and move, they wouldn't do it, because they were afraid – afraid of the giants... and then, they decided on their own later on to go and fight the Amorites, but the Lord told them not to go at that time... but now they want to go...

...again they rebelled against the word of the Lord... every time God tells them what do to they do the opposite...

... but they went and were defeated... and that's when Moses said to them, ”Then you returned and wept before the Lord, but the Lord would not listen to your voice nor give ear to you.”

So they wept because they were defeated by the enemy -- not because they repented of their disobedience...

...and the last verse, v. 46 “So you remained in Kadesh many days, according to the days that you spent there.

Let's pick up now from there and continue with chapter 2...

And remember the simple outline of the book of Deuteronomy as we are reading right now?

Remember what it is?

1_Remember (chapters 1 to 4)

2_Obey (chapters 5 to 27)

3_Take Heed (chapters 28 to 34)

Alright, so chapter 2,

The years in the wilderness

1_“Then we turned, and took our journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea, as the Lord spake unto me: and we compassed mount Seir many days.

So Mount Sinai is at the very southern point of the Sinai Peninsula -- that triangular land we see on a map, that looks like it's between Egypt and Israel – but is actually the north-eastern extremity of Egypt... and the Red Sea's northern point is right there too...

Seir = South of the Dead Sea, in northern Judah, in the country of Edom who were the descendants of Esau the brother of Jacob.

So we're talking about a long way from Seir to northern Judah.

The name "Seir" means “hairy” or “shaggy”... I thought it had something to do with the fact that Esau was a hairy and rough fellow – as you probably remember from the story in the Bible... but a search result from the Wikipedia says that it is associated with the rugged, hairy, or shaggy nature of the mountainous terrain there – as contrasted with smoother areas... well whatever it is – may be both – it's just an interesting description of where the Israelites are passing through on their long journey to the promised land right now...

Narrative # 2

Alright, so let's move on... Moses then says to them:

v. 2_”And the Lord spake unto me, saying,

3_“Ye have compassed this mountain long enough: turn you northward.

4_“And command thou the people, saying, Ye are to pass through the coast of your brethren the children of Esau, which dwell in Seir; and they shall be afraid of you: take ye good heed unto yourselves therefore:

so, this “take ye good heed unto yourselves there” means: “so watch yourselves carefully”.

v.5_“Meddle not with them; for I will not give you of their land, no, not so much as a foot breadth; because I have given mount Seir unto Esau for a possession.

6_“Ye shall buy meat of them for money, that ye may eat; and ye shall also buy water of them for money, that ye may drink.

7_“For the Lord thy God hath blessed thee in all the works of thy hand: he knoweth thy walking through this great wilderness: these forty years the Lord thy God hath been with thee; thou hast lacked nothing.

8_“And when we passed by from our brethren the children of Esau, which dwelt in Seir, through the way of the plain from Elath, and from Eziongaber, we turned and passed by the way of the wilderness of Moab.

Now I'm probably not pronouncing some of these words properly but hopefully we'll get through this...

So moving northerly, this would be East of the Dead Sea, on the way to Jordan.

v._9_“And the Lord said unto me, Distress not the Moabites, neither contend with them in battle: for I will not give thee of their land for a possession; because I have given Ar – that's spelled Ar, it's a place called Ar -- unto the children of Lot for a possession.

Now I don't know why Lot is mentioned here because Lot we read about his demise back in the book of Genesis... I checked a few of the Bible commentaries but none have a foot note on this... but I would assume that at this time, his descendants are still living there.

But on further research I just noticed that in verse 29 which will come up in just a moment, it does mention the Moabites dwelling in Ar... so here something for further investigation... may be the Moabites were descendants of Lot – I don't quite know the answer to this at the moment... let's move on...

so Ar was also located within the area of Jordan today.

v.10_”The Emim (more giants) dwelt therein in times past, a people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakims; (also giants)

now of course we're hearing a lot about giants, there's all kinds of names – most of them ending with “ims” were giants – if not all of them – but there were a lot of them, many at different places, and these were really the ones the Israelites had to fight, but the Lord was with them to fight them off.

11 Which also were accounted giants, as the Anakims; but the Moabites called them Emims.

12 The Horims also dwelt in Seir beforetime; but the children of Esau succeeded them, when they had destroyed them from before them, and dwelt in their stead; as Israel did unto the land of his possession, which the Lord gave unto them.

So this verse right here is a short history about the ancient dwellers called the Horims given by Moses to the people in passing.

Alright and speaking of lands and going to a promised land, here's one of my favorite songs from the 40's – not a church kind of song but a golden oldie that came to my mind yesterday and I couldn't stop humming...

Narrative #3

So let's continue Moses' discourse of what took place on the way in the wilderness...

Let's read from v. 13 to v. 23

v.13_“Then I said, Now rise up, and get you over the brook Zered. And we went over the brook Zered.

v.14_“And the space in which we came from Kadeshbarnea, until we were come over the brook Zered, was thirty and eight years; until all the generation of the men of war were wasted out from among the host, as the Lord sware unto them.

So right here Moses points out the timeline between KadeshBarnia to Zered as being the 38 years they spent in the Wilderness... ...

15_“For indeed the hand of the Lord was against them, to destroy them from among the host, until they were consumed.

16_“So it came to pass, when all the men of war were consumed and dead from among the people,

17_“That the Lord spake unto me, saying,

18_“Thou art to pass over through Ar, the coast of Moab, this day:

19_“And when thou comest nigh over against the children of Ammon, distress them not, nor meddle with them: for I will not give thee of the land of the children of Ammon any possession; because I have given it unto the children of Lot for a possession.

So it seems to be a review again of what Moses had already talked about earlier.

20_“That also was accounted a land of giants: giants dwelt therein in old time; and the Ammonites call them Zamzummims;

So here's another “ims” - more giants.

21_“A people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakims; but the Lord destroyed them before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead:

(and on another side note here, about all these people mentioned ending with “ims”... they can all be traced back to ancient names from earlier books of the Bible. Those ending with the “ims” are most of them known as giants... that's why the Bible itself in this discourse of the journey through the wilderness up through and unto the promised land does mention their names, often calling them “as “the Anakins or other names of known giant races”...

So... a people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakims; but the Lord destroyed them before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead:

and verse.22_”As he did to the children of Esau, which dwelt in Seir, when he destroyed the Horims from before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead even unto this day:

23_“And the Avims which dwelt in Hazerim, even unto Azzah, the Caphtorims, which came forth out of Caphtor, destroyed them, and dwelt in their stead.

So a lot of these giants had been – there was a history already that they were aware of at that time – who killed which giants, from where and so on...

And all these names, as I said can be traced back to their original places of existence ...
I did a search on most of them along the way and they are mentioned in many of the earlier books of the Bible itself as well.

Now, verses 24 to 37...

Israel conquers Sihon

(extra line between verses means paragraph in the New King James)

v.24_”Rise ye up, take your journey, and pass over the river Ar non: behold, I have given into thine hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land: begin to possess it, and contend with him in battle.

(and interestingly the word Sihon means warrior. ).

25_“This day will I begin to put the dread of thee and the fear of thee upon the nations that are under the whole heaven, who shall hear report of thee, and shall tremble, and be in anguish because of thee.

Wow, that's interesting. So God told them that from hereon He would put a dread, a fear, in the name of God's people who were moving into the land.

26_“And I sent messengers out of the wilderness of Kedemoth unto Sihon king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying,

27_“Let me pass through thy land: I will go along by the high way, I will neither turn unto the right hand nor to the left.

28_“Thou shalt sell me meat for money, that I may eat; and give me water for money, that I may drink: only I will pass through on my feet;

29_“(As the children of Esau which dwell in Seir, and the Moabites which dwell in Ar, did unto me;) until I shall pass over Jordan into the land which the Lord our God giveth us.

30_“But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him: for the Lord thy God hardened his spirit, and made his heart obstinate, that he might deliver him into thy hand, as appeareth this day.

31 And the Lord said unto me, Behold, I have begun to give Sihon and his land before thee: begin to possess, that thou mayest inherit his land.

32_“Then Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, to fight at Jahaz.

33_“And the Lord our God delivered him before us; and we smote him, and his sons, and all his people.

34_“And we took all his cities at that time, and utterly destroyed the men, and the women, and the little ones, of every city, we left none to remain:

35_“Only the cattle we took for a prey unto ourselves, and the spoil of the cities which we took.

So all these conquests of the ancient pagan dwellers occured some 3,000 years ago before any of the present cultures were even dreamt of by mankind – except for God... God knew what He was doing all along...

and v.36_”From Aroer (ar-o-ayr' = 'ruins' it's a place), which is by the brink of the river of Arnon, and from the city that is by the river, even unto Gilead, there was not one city too strong for us: the Lord our God delivered all unto us:

37_“Only unto the land of the children of Ammon thou camest not, nor unto any place of the river Jabbok, nor unto the cities in the mountains, nor unto whatsoever the Lord our God forbad us.

So there were some places that the Lord told them not to touch.

Now interestingly, all of these names of places and cities, etc. are all repeated in the 4 previous books where the longer versions of each their stories took place.

That's why – as you will remember -- at the beginning of this book of Deuteronomy when I started this particular reading or study, I mentioned that this particular book was a good place to get into the reading of the 5 books of Moses in the Old Testament, because it was a summary of all of that which took place in the wilderness and through the wilderness.

Music Interlude...

Alright, so in the next chapter that we are going to look at, Israel conquers Og of Bashan...

This is important because it is one of the last places the Israelites defeated the enemies of God before entering the promised land.

Remember the simple outline or the 3 divisions we started out with at the beginning of this book of Deuteronomy?

1_Remember (chapters 1 to 4)

2_Obey (chapters 5 to 27)

3_Take Heed (chapters 28 to 34)

This conquest of King Og of Bashan was one of the last victories of the Israelites over the many races of giants that existing still at that time. It demonstrates God's power and faitfulness to his people of the promised land He was taking them to. King Og was defeated along with his army and the Rephaim race in his kingdom of Bashan.

After this we will get into outline #2 which will outline the way the people of God are to obey His covenant...

So let's get started into this story, in

chapter 3, verses 1 to 25...

1_”Then we turned, and went up the way to Bashan: and Og the king of Bashan came out against us, he and all his people, to battle at Edrei.

2_“And the Lord said unto me, Fear him not: for I will deliver him, and all his people, and his land, into thy hand; and thou shalt do unto him as thou didst unto Sihon king of the Amorites, which dwelt at Heshbon.

3_“So the Lord our God delivered into our hands Og also, the king of Bashan, and all his people: and we smote him until none was left to him remaining.

4_“And we took all his cities at that time, there was not a city which we took not from them, threescore cities,(that's 60 cities) all the region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan.

5_“All these cities were fenced with high walls, gates, and bars; beside unwalled towns a great many.

6_“And we utterly destroyed them, as we did unto Sihon king of Heshbon, utterly destroying the men, women, and children, of every city.

7_“But all the cattle, and the spoil of the cities, we took for a prey to ourselves.

8_“And we took at that time out of the hand of the two kings of the Amorites the land that was on this side Jordan, from the river of Arnon unto mount Hermon;

9_“(Which Hermon the Sidonians call Sirion; and the Amorites call it Shenir;)

10_“All the cities of the plain, and all Gilead, and all Bashan, unto Salchah and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan.

11_“For only Og king of Bashan remained of the remnant of giants; behold his bedstead was a bedstead of iron; is it not in Rabbath of the children of Ammon? nine cubits was the length thereof, and four cubits the breadth of it, after the cubit of a man.

And a cubit was about 18 inches long.

And verses 12 to 14:

12_“And this land, which we possessed at that time, from Aroer, which is by the river Arnon, and half mount Gilead, and the cities thereof, gave I unto the Reubenites and to the Gadites.

13_“And the rest of Gilead, and all Bashan, being the kingdom of Og, gave I unto the half tribe of Manasseh; all the region of Argob, with all Bashan, which was called the land of giants.

14_“Jair the son of Manasseh took all the country of Argob unto the coasts of Geshuri and Maachathi (Mah-ak-aw); and called them after his own name, Bashanhavothjair (Bashan-yavo_jair), unto this day.

(and of course “this day” is speaking of 1410 BC which we are still in).

15_“And I gave Gilead unto Machir.

(Machir was the oldest son of Manassah. His name appears 22 times in the Bible in books both before and after Deuteroomy – actually mostly in the book after Deuteronomy.)

So there's a lot of history to be read about on all of these names that we read in these books of Moses – all with fascinating stories.

And we've come to the end of this service for today and we will pick up with the rest of chapter 3 which will be the end of the journey adventures of the Wilderness of the people of God...

In the next program we will get into the outline #2 which will be very interesting about all the exhortation to the Israelites to obey the Lord their God...

Closing Narrative…

Oh how wonderful to appreciate what Jesus has done in our lives to save us from sin by Grace... and how He continues to keep us by His on-going and unlimited Grace...

...that wonderful Grace that comes into our life the moment that we receive Him as for who He is -- the Saviour of mankind and of every individual like you and me personally...

... and this Jesus the Son of God who came to give His life for you and me is the same Jesus who's life we've been reading about in these series of programs right now, and who's death on the cross we will see as we go through the gospel story to where He gave Himself as the sacrificial Lamb of God that took the sin of the world...

...but right now, the question is:

...do you know this Jesus that we're talking about? If you don't know the Lord...

...Just say this prayer, “Lord come into my heart, come into my life, I turn to you right now and ask for forgiveness, I repent of my sins and receive your work on the cross...  I receive your gospel as it was delivered through your blood shed on the cross in my place, and I thank you, Amen...
