Narrative 1

So, here we are at the great Christian celebration of Easter 2025! --

or I should say the great Christian celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour ...

But I have to say right here that I am always miffed at why on the 1 week before this event of the Resurrection of Jesus, churches would preach on anything other than what went on 1 week before the terrible lead up to the crucifixion of Jesus, and then His glorious resurrection 3 days later.

I was listening to such a preaching where the message that week before Easter was about something other than the week Jesus had to go through before His crucifixion...

and that message happened to be out of the last part of the Sermon on the Mount that Jesus delivered way back at the beginning of His 3 years ministry... in other words here we are one week before Easter and the preaching is about something that happened 3 years before... and on top of that, the preaching was very much about us rather than about our Lord's last week on earth...

I couldn't help but thinking of that horrific last week and what had taken place in the life of our Lord -- which was all about why He had been sent down here by the Father... such an awesome story and yet here I was listening to a preacher who talked about us and our struggles with life and all the carnal illustrations and anecdotal humour that so often goes with its preaching of today...

To me it was just such a missed opportunity to bring the message of our Lord to people, about what Jesus went through during that week leading up to the resurrection day that everybody is looking forward to... often more selfishly than anything else.

So many people don't realize and don't hear about that week preceding Jesus' crucifixion – what He went through -- it's not just about Easter that we celebrate... it was so surreal what God had to go through to bring us our Salvation... so we need to hear and we need to remember every year as we celebrate this time of Easter...

So, we'll get into that in a moment, but right now let's listen to this...

Narrative # 2

Alright so, as I was saying, a lot of people don't realize what Jesus had to go through before that Resurrection day that we so often look forward to with thoughts of celebration, foods, holidays, “chocolates, etc... as well as the resurrection meaning itself that we do indeed recognize and appreciate....

but there is also the hard part of that which led up to that glorious Resurrection Day that most people do not look at and remember...

All these Christian holidays and Jewish Feasts were given to us by God in order to “remember”... remembering is an extremely important part of God's doings throughout history – His story – all the things He did and decreed...

Every year as we enter the Passion Week, there are a multitude of incredible things that we need to remember at this time of Easter, especially the time leading up to the crucifixion...

It all began with the Triumphant Entry of our Lord into Jerusalem – what we call Palm Sunday, and which we can read in Matthew 21, Mark 11, Luke 19, and John 12...

We read about Jesus weeping over Jerusalem, the Olivet discourse (Matthew 24, Mark 13, Luke 21), Many theological teachings of the Lord, including the parable of the ten virgins concerning the importance of being ready for the coming of Jesus, the day of Gods judgment...

we read about the pursuit of the religious rulers after Jesus to arrest Him for false accusations, the betrayal, Jesus’ arrest, mock trial, beating, and finally His death on the cross are all things to remember this week and always.

... we have the cleansing of the temple, the curse upon the fig tree, the voiceheard from heaven by certain Greeks who had come to see Jesus...

we also have the words of Jesus about Himself being the Cornerstone, then other teachings that we can read separately from the scriptures in that part of the Bible that covers the last week of Jesus, before Easter...

... and so many other teachings Jesus told the crowds and the rulers, and we're just halfway through that week... but I want to get to the last hours of Jesus' life which brings us to the crucifixion, and then His Resurrection that we are celebrating on this Easter around the world...

He spoke openly to His disciples about the crucifixion that He was about to face, the betrayal of Judas, and even of the disciples later on, we read about the preparation for the Passover... which brings us to Thursday of that week, Jesus' prediction of Peter's denial of his following Jesus....

Then He gave the last speech to the apostles about the Comforter, the Vine and the Branches, the authority of His name, Jesus' famous prayer of John 17, the grief of Gethsemany, and so many other Biblical truths given by our Lord and reported by the disciples... all that took place during Jesus' last week...and we just don't have enough time to read all that today, but will go back to in the weeks to come...

Music interlude...

Narrative #3

Alright, so here we will get into the last 6 hours of our Lord's life on earth...

...but just before that, after the grief of Gethsemany, you remember when Jesus went to the Mount of Olives with the disciples and they fell asleep while He was praying with exceeding sorrow and emotional pain of what was just about to happen to Him... we read that in Matthew 26... Mark 14 and Luke 22...

Then we read about the betrayal, arrest and desertion took place, let's read that from John chapter 18, verses 2 to 11:

2, “And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples.

3, Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons.

4, Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye?

Now right here, this is very interesting because the Bible says that Jesus knew everything that was coming upon Him ahead of time; that's why all the way through when He was with the disciples He would tell them about things to come, and as they got closer to it He would give them even more details. This is amazing.

So Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye?

verse 5, “They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them.

6, As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground.

Can you imagine this? A lot of people miss this.

Now this is awesome... why did they fall to the ground ?

Well Jesus actually said, “I am”, not “I am he”. The “he” in the King James Bible is in italic—which as you know those italic words were put there to make sense of the translation of sentences from Hebrew/Greek to English. So they are italic to show that they were added for that purpose.

Now the band of officers and priests and Pharisees who came with Judas to arrest Him, knew exactly what Jesus said!

So it was a very forthwith verbal sign that Jesus threw in to them, knowing exactly that they would know what that meant, because remember they kept accusing Him of His true identify.

So, verse 7, “Then He asked them again, Whom do you seek ? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.

8, Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he: if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way: -- these meaning His disciples.

And verse 9, “That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none.

Now here again, Jesus is speaking to the religious rulers who know the Old Testament, and He quotes out of it. Wow this is fascinating.

Verse 10, “Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.(mal'-khos)

11, Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?

Then we read about Jesus being arrested and Peter's triple denial...
the accusations against Him and the reaction of Judas....

lets read that in Matthew 27, verses 1 to 10:

1, “When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death:

2, And when they had bound him, they led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor.

3, Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders...

...wow, did you get this... when Judas saw that – I mean he knew all that... he was there with the disciples when Jesus was telling them all of what was going to happen... and now he's seeing it with his own eyes and realizes the reality...

and then he says:

4, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that.

5, And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself.

and verse 6, And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood.

7, And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in.

8, Wherefore that field was called, The field of blood, unto this day.

9, Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value;

10, And gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord appointed me.

So all of that was already prophesied in the Old Testament even...

Narrative #4

... and now the accusations before Pilate -- verses 11 to 14:

11, And Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, Thou sayest.

12, And when he was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing.

13, Then said Pilate unto him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee?

14, And he answered him never a word; insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly.

Then Jesus was taken before Herod, then again before Pilate...

And this is all taking place Friday morning...

Then He is mocked by the Roman soldiers...

then Led to Golgotha, via Dolorosa...

Matthew 27, verses 31 to 34:

“And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him.

...because they had put on Him a robe to mock Him of being a King, now they gave Him back His own clothes...

32, And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear his cross.

33, And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull,

34, They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink.

And they crucified Him...

Let's read the first 3 hours of Jesus' last 6 hours:

This would be the 3rd hour according to the Bible, or 9 o'clock Friday morning:

So Jesus went through all what we just read since very early that same morning:

So, Matthew 27, verses 35 to 44:

35, And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots. (Psalm 22:18).

36, And sitting down they watched him there;

37, And set up over his head his accusation written, This Is Jesus The King Of The Jews.

38, Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left.

39, And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads,

40, And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross.

41, Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said,

42, He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.

43, He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God.

44, The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth.

And now the last 3 hours of Jesus, leading to His death:

this would be now 12 noon to 3 pm:

Matthew 27, verses 45 to 50:

45, “Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.

46, And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

47, Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elias.

48, And straightway one of them ran, and took a spunge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink.

49, The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him.

50, Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.

And of course there are many more details reported by the other 3 gospel writers that we should all read separately because we just can't cover them all in this program...

... but let me ask you this... how many of you have heard all that just recently, just in the last week before Easter? I would like to know... I'd love to know actually, write to me on my website through the contact form I'd like to hear your comments on that.

And then of course we have then the report of the soldier who pierced Jesus' side,... which that also you can read separate from this program... just pick up your Bible during this time of Easter and read the last week before Easter and everything else up to the Resurrection...

... and then we read about His burial...

and then, of course we read that great and glorious day of Resurrection that everyone usually looks forward to as I discussed at the beginning....

again we will have to read that apart from our own Bibles separately from this program because of the time restraint here today,

but I will let the next songs give some of the highlights of it right now...

Closing Narrative…

Oh how wonderful to appreciate what Jesus has done in our lives to save us from sin by Grace... and how He continues to keep us by His on-going and unlimited Grace...

...that wonderful Grace that comes into our life the moment that we receive Him as for who He is -- the Saviour of mankind and of every individual like you and me personally...

... and this Jesus the Son of God who came to give His life for you and me is the same Jesus who's life we've been reading about in these series of programs right now, and who's death on the cross we will see as we go through the gospel story to where He gave Himself as the sacrificial Lamb of God that took the sin of the world...

...but right now, the question is:

...do you know this Jesus that we're talking about? If you don't know the Lord...

...Just say this prayer, “Lord come into my heart, come into my life, I turn to you right now and ask for forgiveness, I repent of my sins and receive your work on the cross...  I receive your gospel as it was delivered through your blood shed on the cross in my place, and I thank you, Amen...
