Narrative 1
And now we will go back to the book of Matthew where Jesus breaks down traditions... and this is right after His time in Gennesaret where He healed many sicks that were brought to Him from around the country...
So, Matthew chapter 15, verses 1 to 21:
Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying,
2 Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread.
3 But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?
4 For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother let him be put to death.
(Reading from the New King James Bible):
5, But you say, ‘Whoever says to his father or mother, “Whatever profit you might have received from me is a gift to God”—
6, then he need not honor his father or mother.’ Thus you have made the commandment of God of no effect by your tradition.
(Back to the Old King James):
7 Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying,
8 This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.
9 But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
10 And he called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand:
11 Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.
12 Then came his disciples, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended, after they heard this saying?
13 But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up.
14 Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.
15 Then answered Peter and said unto him, Declare unto us this parable.
16 And Jesus said, Are ye also yet without understanding?
17 Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught?
18 But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.
19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:
20 These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashed hands defileth not a man.
21 Then Jesus went thence, and departed into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon.
And next we will read Mark's version of this event right after this:

Narrative #2
So let's continue with Mark's version of this event where Jesus speaks of the things that defile men...
And I will read this from the New King James...
Mark chapter 7, verses 1 to 23:
1, “Then the Pharisees and some of the scribes came together to Him, having come from Jerusalem.
2 Now when they saw some of His disciples eat bread with defiled, that is, with unwashed hands, they found fault.
3 For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands in a special way, holding the tradition of the elders.
4 When they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash. And there are many other things which they have received and hold, like the washing of cups, pitchers, copper vessels, and couches.
5 Then the Pharisees and scribes asked Him, “Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashed hands?”
6 He answered and said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written:
‘This people honors Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me.
7 And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’
8 For laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men—the washing of pitchers and cups, and many other such things you do.”
9 He said to them, “All too well you reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition.
10 For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.’
11 But you say, ‘If a man says to his father or mother, “Whatever profit you might have received from me is Corban”—’ (that is, a gift to God),
12 then you no longer let him do anything for his father or his mother,
13 making the word of God of no effect through your tradition which you have handed down. And many such things you do.”
Now what does that all mean? We need to unpack the meaning of what is being discussed here. And the best explanation that I got from my research is from the Liberty Bible Commentary... and here it is:
“These verses present an example of how their tradition nullified the law. The precept, 'Honor thy father and thy mother', which included 'honoring' by financial support is among the Ten Commandments in the Old Testament. (Ex. 20:12).
“It beame customary for supposedly pious Jews to claim that their funds were already designated as a 'gift' to God, when they were confronted with their parents' need.
“More than that, a Pharisee could impose a certain amount upon a layman, and if he replied, 'But I am obligated to help my mother and father!', he could insist 'You are freed from this commandment, because that money is 'Corban' (Greek transliteration of Hebrew 'qarban', meaning a gift for God); it is a God-appointed gift for His service.”
So in other words they could be approached to support their parents financially and could say 'Well I already gave that or appointed this gift to God so I can't do it... and then they would get away with it.
So what we see here is that all those “commandments” given by God had become totally re-directed for whatever the people's own selfish purpose was or had come to be. And that's what Jesus was talking about.
14 When He had called all the multitude to Himself, He said to them, “Hear Me, everyone, and understand:
15 There is nothing that enters a man from outside which can defile him; but the things which come out of him, those are the things that defile a man.
16 If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear!”
17 When He had entered a house away from the crowd, His disciples asked Him concerning the parable.
18 So He said to them, “Are you thus without understanding also? Do you not perceive that whatever enters a man from outside cannot defile him,
19 because it does not enter his heart but his stomach, and is eliminated, thus purifying all foods?”
20 And He said, “What comes out of a man, that defiles a man.
21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,
22 thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness.
23 All these evil things come from within and defile a man.”
Wow, so as we can see, this recording from Mark is quite more extensive and to the point than the previous one given by Matthew which was good as well, but not as elaborate.... here we have also a explanation of Matthew's writings, as well as a lot more details on top of that.
This was quite a well said version of this event that took place at this time on the things that defile man.
We also see in all of what Jesus said here that what was in the Old Testament had been expanded by men as their own traditions which had come to be used to suppress the people.

Narrative #3
Alright, now let's go to Tyre and Sidon again, where Jesus heals a Canaanite woman, reading from
Matthew chapter 15, verses 21 to 28
So, this is when Jesus left Gennesaret and departed into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon.
Verse 21, “Then Jesus went thence, and departed into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon.
22, And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil.
23 But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us.
24 But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
25 Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me.
26 But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it to dogs.
27 And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters' table.
28 Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.
Is it not amazing how the Lord had such compassion on people with great faith. Amen.
And now, Mark's version on this:
Mark chapter 7, verses 24 to 30,
verse 24, “And from thence he arose, and went into the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and entered into an house, and would have no man know it: but he could not be hid.
25 For a certain woman, whose young daughter had an unclean spirit, heard of him, and came and fell at his feet:
26 The woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation; and she besought him that he would cast forth the devil out of her daughter.
27 But Jesus said unto her, Let the children first be filled: for it is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it unto the dogs.
28 And she answered and said unto him, Yes, Lord: yet the dogs under the table eat of the children's crumbs.
29 And he said unto her, For this saying go thy way; the devil is gone out of thy daughter.
30 And when she was come to her house, she found the devil gone out, and her daughter laid upon the bed.
So we can see that the story is about the same except for some small details where one had a few things that the other one did'nt have and vice versa but the story is reported the same.
Now we are moving to a place called Decapolis where Jesus healed multitudes of sick people and also fed now 4,000 of them ...
Matthew chapter 15, verses 29 to 31,
29, “And Jesus departed from thence, and came nigh unto the sea of Galilee; and went up into a mountain, and sat down there.
30 And great multitudes came unto him, having with them those that were lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and cast them down at Jesus' feet; and he healed them:
31 Insomuch that the multitude wondered, when they saw the dumb to speak, the maimed to be whole, the lame to walk, and the blind to see: and they glorified the God of Israel.
And Mark's reporting on this:
Mark chapter 7, verses 31 to 37
31, “And again, departing from the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, he came unto the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the coasts of Decapolis.
32 And they bring unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech; and they beseech him to put his hand upon him.
33 And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spit, and touched his tongue;
34 And looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith unto him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened.
35 And straightway his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spake plain.
36 And he charged them that they should tell no man: but the more he charged them, so much the more a great deal they published it;
37 And were beyond measure astonished, saying, He hath done all things well: he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak.
And next we will read about the miracle of the 4,000... you remember that earlier on Jesus fed the 5,000 back around the time that John the Baptist was beheaded by Herod. Now, we will see another multitude being fed, right after this...

Narrative #4
Alright, so, back to Decapolis where we are about to see now the miracle of the 4,000 people being fed...
Matthew chapter 15, verses 32 to 39,
32, “Then Jesus called his disciples unto him, and said, I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three days, and have nothing to eat: and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint in the way.
33 And his disciples say unto him, Whence should we have so much bread in the wilderness, as to fill so great a multitude?
34 And Jesus saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven, and a few little fishes.
35 And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground.
36 And he took the seven loaves and the fishes, and gave thanks, and brake them, and gave to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.
37 And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets full.
38 And they that did eat were four thousand men, beside women and children.
39 And he sent away the multitude, and took ship, and came into the coasts of Magdala.
And now from Mark's reporting on this:
Mark chapter 8, verses 1 to 9,
1, “In those days the multitude being very great, and having nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples unto him, and saith unto them,
2 I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now been with me three days, and have nothing to eat:
3 And if I send them away fasting to their own houses, they will faint by the way: for divers of them came from far.
4 And his disciples answered him, From whence can a man satisfy these men with bread here in the wilderness?
5 And he asked them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven.
6 And he commanded the people to sit down on the ground: and he took the seven loaves, and gave thanks, and brake, and gave to his disciples to set before them; and they did set them before the people.
7 And they had a few small fishes: and he blessed, and commanded to set them also before them.
8 So they did eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets.
9 And they that had eaten were about four thousand: and he sent them away.
And we've come to the end of this program for today... next week we'll get into the warnings given to the disciples about the doctrine of the religious leaders...
Now I wanted to end with an appropriate song here about Jesus and the miracles He worked during His preaching and healing tours throughout the land, but I searched everywhere in my library and Cds but could not find anything appropriate...
but I came across a song I played some years ago in one of my earlier programs, and so I will play that right now about the end times that we are living in today...
we've been looking at the beginning of Jesus' ministry so far and are moving along toward the later weeks of Jesus, and will be getting into the time when He spoke a lot about end times, and that is an important part of Jesus' teaching when He was on earth...
but until we get there, there is so much happening around us today that we are ever so much aware and reminded of the end times... so I will play that right here right now...

Closing Narrative…
Oh how wonderful to appreciate what Jesus has done in our lives to save us from sin by Grace... and how He continues to keep us by His on-going and unlimited Grace...
...that wonderful Grace that comes into our life the moment that we receive Him as for who He is -- the Saviour of mankind and of every individual like you and me personally...
... and this Jesus the Son of God who came to give His life for you and me is the same Jesus who's life we've been reading about in these series of programs right now, and who's death on the cross we will see as we go through the gospel story to where He gave Himself as the sacrificial Lamb of God that took the sin of the world...
...but right now, the question is:
...do you know this Jesus that we're talking about? If you don't know the Lord...
...Just say this prayer, “Lord come into my heart, come into my life, I turn to you right now and ask for forgiveness, I repent of my sins and receive your work on the cross... I receive your gospel as it was delivered through your blood shed on the cross in my place, and I thank you, Amen...
The Blessing
