Narrative 1
So, we pick up from where we left off last week... we were still reading in the long discourse of Matthew 13, verses 1 to 52 where Jesus spoke to the people in various parables...
we ended with reading at verses 44 to 50 with the parables of the treasure, the pearl of great price and of the net... and then Jesus closing this segment with verses 49 and 50:
49_”So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just,
50_”And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.
So today we pick up at
Matthew chapter 13, verses 51 to 52
v. 51_”Jesus saith unto them, Have ye understood all these things? They say unto him, Yea, Lord – or yes Lord.
52 Then said he unto them, Therefore every scribe which is instructed unto the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old.
The Complete Jewish Study Bible says it this way:
51 “Have you understood all these things?” “Yes,” they answered. 52 He said to them, “So then, every Torah-teacher (sofer) (scribe) who has been made into a talmid (disciple) for the Kingdom of Heaven is like the owner of a home who brings out of his storage room both new things and old.”
So Torah-teacher, the word is sofer which means scribe and talmid means a disciples.
So a scribe is a Torah-teacher and a talmid is a disciple—or a follower of a teacher, for example Peter was a disciple of Christ – he was a follower of Christ.
So now let's look at Mark's report on this:
Let's start with Mark chapter 4, verses 1 to 9:
The Parable of the Sower,:
1_”And he began again to teach by the sea side: and there was gathered unto him a great multitude, so that he entered into a ship, and sat in the sea; and the whole multitude was by the sea on the land.
2_And he taught them many things by parables, and said unto them in his doctrine,
3_Hearken; Behold, there went out a sower to sow:
4_And it came to pass, as he sowed, some fell by the way side, and the fowls of the air came and devoured it up.
5_And some fell on stony ground, where it had not much earth; and immediately it sprang up, because it had no depth of earth:
6_But when the sun was up, it was scorched; and because it had no root, it withered away.
7_And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up, and choked it, and it yielded no fruit.
8_And other fell on good ground, and did yield fruit that sprang up and increased; and brought forth, some thirty, and some sixty, and some an hundred.
9_And he said unto them, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.”
Let's continue with verses 10 to 20,
where Jesus is asked to explain the parable:
10_”And when he was alone, they that were about him with the twelve asked of him the parable.
11_And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables:
12_That seeing they may see, and not perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand; lest at any time they should be converted, and their sins should be forgiven them.
13_And he said unto them, Know ye not this parable? and how then will ye know all parables?
Add here: In other words if you don't understand this parable, then how will you understand all the parables?
14_The sower soweth the word.
15_And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts.
16_And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground; who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with gladness;
17_And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word's sake, immediately they are offended.
18_And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word,
19_And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.
20_And these are they which are sown on good ground; such as hear the word, and receive it, and bring forth fruit, some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some an hundred”.
As we can see it is pretty well the same as given in Matthew's gospel.
Now let's look at the parable of the candle under a bushel, byMark...
Mark chapter 4 verses 21 to 25
21_And he said unto them, Is a candle brought to be put under a bushel, or under a bed? and not to be set on a candlestick?
22_For there is nothing hid, which shall not be manifested; neither was any thing kept secret, but that it should come abroad.
23_If any man have ears to hear, let him hear.
24_And he said unto them, Take heed what ye hear: with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you: and unto you that hear shall more be given.
And hear really means receive – we can hear and not receive – so He is saying if you hear and receive, more shall be given unto you.
25_For he that hath, to him shall be given: and he that hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he hath.

Narrative # 2
Alright, so let's continue in
Mark chapter 4, verses 26 to 29 –
the parable of the seed:
v. 26_"And he said, So is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast seed into the ground;
27_And should sleep, and rise night and day, and the seed should spring and grow up, he knoweth not how.
28_For the earth bringeth forth fruit of herself; first the blade, then the ear, after that the full corn in the ear.
29_But when the fruit is brought forth, immediately he putteth in the sickle, because the harvest is come.
Verses 30 to 32 – the parable of the mustard seed:
30 And he said, Whereunto shall we liken the kingdom of God? or with what comparison shall we compare it?
31 It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when it is sown in the earth, is less than all the seeds that be in the earth:
32 But when it is sown, it groweth up, and becometh greater than all herbs, and shooteth out great branches; so that the fowls of the air may lodge under the shadow of it.
so right here Jesus refers to the way a seed grows when it is planted that He just illustrated... so the seed is planted, then while the days and nights pass on... the seed grows, we don't know how, but the earth brings that forth by itself... first the blade, then the ear, after that the full corn in the ear....
and before we know it, it is time for harvest... and the big reveal is that such is the Kingdom of God in comparison... the tiny mustard seed grows up to become greater than all the plants and shoots out great branches so that the fowls of the air may lodge under its shade.
Such is the kingdom of God... again, amazing!
And then we are told that Jesus spoke to them even further with more parables:
Verses 33 & 34:
33_And with many such parables spake he the word unto them, as they were able to hear it.
34_But without a parable spake he not unto them: and when they were alone, he expounded all things to his disciples.
Now this is very interesting because what we're seeing here, what we're hearing is that we did not hear all the parables that the Lord told during this time... so He was talking to them – a lot more than what we're reading today – but He was talking to them always in parables... that's very amazing!

Narrative #3
Now let's see what Luke said on these parables...
let's go back to Luke chapter 8,
picking up from verses 4 to 8 – the parable of the sower:
4 And when much people were gathered together, and were come to him out of every city, he spake by a parable:
5 A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it.
6 And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it lacked moisture.
7 And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it.
8 And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit an hundredfold. And when he had said these things, he cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
And verse 9 to 15...
9 And his disciples asked him, saying, What might this parable be?
10 And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand.
11 Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.
12 Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.
13 They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away.
14 And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection.
15 But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience.
Now this is sort of a new way of hearing the wrap-up of the good ground... when Jesus says, “but that on the good ground are they which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it and bring forth fruit with patience...
so with an honest and good heart.... now we heard earlier that we need to receive the word in our heart and here is added, “in honesty”... so with an honest and good heart... and keep it and bring forth fruit, then “with patience”... So honesting, good heart or right heart and patience....
and then the next one that Luke recorded at this time...
Then we read of the parable of the candle,
verses 16 to 18
16 No man, when he hath lighted a candle, covereth it with a vessel, or putteth it under a bed; but setteth it on a candlestick, that they which enter in may see the light.
17 For nothing is secret, that shall not be made manifest; neither any thing hid, that shall not be known and come abroad.
18 Take heed therefore how ye hear: for whosoever hath, to him shall be given; and whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he seemeth to have.
So again, we see that this reads pretty well the same as the previous gospel writers on the same subject matter...
And, finally... we will end this segment with Luke 13, about the grain of mustard seed.
And that is from Luke chapter 13 verse 18 to 21...
18 Then said he (speaking of Jesus), Unto what is the kingdom of God like? and whereunto shall I resemble it?
19 It is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and cast into his garden; and it grew, and waxed a great tree; and the fowls of the air lodged in the branches of it.
20 And again he said, Whereunto shall I liken the kingdom of God?
21 It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.
So here we see basically the same as all the other writers about the mustard seed.... plus there's an addition here of the example of the leaven which makes the whole meal (bread) puff up or grow up. And so that was another way of looking at the explanation of the growth of kingdom of God
And, actually there is one more portion that fits in this event going on as well... which covers a segment of discipleship that we find only here from
Matthew 8:18-22 --
18 Now when Jesus saw great multitudes about him, he gave commandment to depart unto the other side.
19 And a certain scribe came, and said unto him, Master, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.
20 And Jesus saith unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.
In other words Jesus said to him, you want to follow me, you better count the cost...
21 And another of his disciples said unto him, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.
22 But Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead.
Now, I'm sure that most of you listening in today remember this scripture... it is actually pretty hard to hear or to receive in a normal sense... but it was not meant to be a harsh statement by our Lord... actually it was not a harsh statement by our Lord...
What this would-be disciple was saying, according to the Hebrew translation – is that he wanted to follow Jesus but when his father would pass away.... however what Jesus replied was to emphasize that God the Father's business is urgent now in this moment.

Closing Narrative…
Oh how wonderful to appreciate what Jesus has done in our lives to save us from sin by Grace... and how He continues to keep us by His on-going and unlimited Grace...
...that wonderful Grace that comes into our life the moment that we receive Him as for who He is -- the Saviour of mankind and of every individual like you and me personally...
... and this Jesus the Son of God who came to give His life for you and me is the same Jesus who's life we've been reading about in these series of programs right now, and who's death on the cross we will see as we go through the gospel story to where He gave Himself as the sacrificial Lamb of God that took the sin of the world...
...but right now, the question is:
...do you know this Jesus that we're talking about? If you don't know the Lord...
...Just say this prayer, “Lord come into my heart, come into my life, I turn to you right now and ask for forgiveness, I repent of my sins and receive your work on the cross... I receive your gospel as it was delivered through your blood shed on the cross in my place, and I thank you, Amen...
