chapter 15 old testament

In spite of those who like to put away the Old Testament from the New, the fact
is that the ancient Scriptures are just as relevant today, and as necessary as they were before Jesus walked on this earth.

The above does not mean that the Old Testament is necessary for Salvation, because it is not. But it does point out sin and the need for Grace which came in the NewTestament, and shows that man cannot live righteously before God without the Grace and Mercy of God.

The Old Testament shows us how to live without making the same mistakes the early fathers made, it shows us the history of God’s people, what our roots are, how history repeats itself, how mankind evolved (in the historical sense from Genesis onward), how God the Father responds to the various situations of righteous and unrighteous living by the human race – warts and all. It shows the shadow of the things that were to come in the New Testament as well as beyond in the future.

In the New Testament there are some nine-hundred-and-fifty-six scripture verse references, direct and indirect, to the Old Testament. That makes it relevant – many of them quoted by our Lord Himself. We need the Old Testament to understand and appreciate the New.

In the book, The God Who Is There, Francis Schaeffer wrote, “Take away the first three chapters of Genesis, and you cannot maintain a true Christian position nor give Christianity’s answers.”
